Oh hey 2017,
It’s so nice to finally meet you! I spent the last 31+ days gearing up to make your acquaintance. And I’ll tell ya, I have big plans for you over the next 365 days!!
Call it a happiness project or a life project or a New Year’s resolution, but I’ve decided 2017 will be the year that I introduce more healthy and fun activities for my mind body and soul. I am going to spend my time with you wisely, unlike the time I have spent with the years that have come before you. With you in my corner I want to alter my daily habits, work on my short term and long term goals and give some meaning to my days. Why all the dramatics you ask?
This revelation came late last year on a particularly frustrating Saturday. I was in a foul mood and decided that mood was a symptom of feeling lost/without purpose. As a knowledge hungry person often does, I went to work on the internet and did some research. I knew I needed something to change but wasn’t sure what.
My exploration pointed toward goals. So simple yet so overwhelming, right? I didn’t have any specific goals to work toward. I had a picture of how I wanted my life to turn out but did not have any clear direction on how to get there. It appears many people have been/are in the same boat. A quick Google search will uncover a plethora of websites, podcasts, and books. All devoted to finding your purpose, “designing your life”, goal planning and life management.
For the last 2 months I have read books and blog posts and listened to podcasts about living with a purpose. The Simple Dollar has a great blog post to read on this topic. In December, I took a few days and thought about what I want my life to look like. From there I came up with 15 long term goals. Then I broke those long term goals down into 30 short term goals. With my short term goals in hand I thoughtfully listed out a plan to accomplish each short term goal. Each plan consists of weekly/monthly action steps. And those steps are written out and on display in my 2017 planner. Each week I plan on crossing off at least 1 action step from each plan off my list.
So 2017 get ready, because you and I are going on a wonderful ride this year!
